  • There are fourteen different otter species, but only the Enhydra lutris is fully aquatic.
  • The southern sea otter is the smallest marine mammal in North America, at up to 4 feet (1.2 m) long and up to 50 pounds (23 kg) for females and 70 pounds (32 kg) for males. It's not the smallest marine mammal though -- that title belongs to South America's Lontra felina.
  • Sea otters prey on urchins and other invertebrates that graze on giant kelp, preventing urchins from forming "urchin barrens".
  • Sea otters are a keystone species in the Elkhorn Slough estuary by eating crabs, allowing sea slug populations to thrive. The sea slugs eat algae that would otherwise coat and smother eelgrass, which fish need for food and shelter.
  • A sea otter always returns to the surface to eat, where they float on their back and use their chest as a table. They may also use a rock to crack open their prey.
  • An otter's coat has loose skin under each forearm which they can use to stash prey, allowing them to scoop up more morsels during a single dive.
  • They have the world's densest fur, which helps them stay warm in chilly ocean waters.
  • To keep this fur waterproof, an otter spends many hours each day cleaning and grooming, which coats the fur with natural oils from their skin and fluffs it up with insulating air bubbles.
  • Otters have high metabolism, giving them a large appetite, needing to consume about a quarter of their body weight each day.
  • They have an average body temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
